Juror's Comment:
"Successful use of the architectural vocabulary makes the addition a part of the campus."

Project Description:
The main requirements for renovating the existing building, built in 1954, were to make the facility handicap accessible throughout and to utilize existing unused areas for additional classroom spaces required by the church's youth division.

To achieve the accessibility requirements, two features were incorporated into the design. First, an elevator was added to the building, thereby providing handicap access to the previously inaccessible second and third floors. Second, a new entry lobby was added that houses the glass-enclosed elevator and, through minimal exterior regrading allows direct handicapped accessibility into the previously inaccessible facility. The two-story entry lobby, with a second level overlook, becomes the focal point for the building. Extensive plan revisions to the upper floors were required to provide access to the elevator.

Interior renovation was executed throughout the building to improve the existing meeting spaces. Eliminating adjacent unused rooms allowed the large meeting space for the building to be enlarged. An existing unused bowling alley was converted into a new counseling suite and large classroom with movable partitions. All other classrooms throughout the facility were renovated including some that were unused because of disrepair. Another design feature added to the facility was the creation of window openings in the third floor classrooms overlooking the second floor gymnasium which greatly increased the sense of openness in the building.

Additionally, extensive site work, including demolition of another church owned facility, expansion of parking areas, construction of masonry site walls, and the addition of site lighting was performed to enhance the overall church campus.
